The Czech automaker’s decision to reintroduce diesel engines through the new-generation Superb represents more than just product strategy – it’s a calculated bet that Indian consumers still crave the torque and efficiency that made Skoda synonymous with diesel excellence.

The Diesel Gamble That Could Pay Off

Skoda’s announcement to bring back diesel engines marks the first such move by any Volkswagen Group brand since the infamous Dieselgate scandal a decade ago. The fourth-generation Superb, showcased at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025, features a 2.0-liter diesel engine producing 193hp and 400Nm of torque, paired with all-wheel-drive capability that transforms the traditional luxury sedan into something more adventurous.

This isn’t just nostalgia driving the decision. Petr Janeba, Brand Director for Skoda Auto India, cites continued customer demand as the primary motivation. “Indian customers are still asking for diesel cars,” he explains, referencing data showing diesel’s share in passenger vehicle sales growing from 17.8% in 2023 to 18% in early 2024.

Premium Positioning with Realistic Expectations

The new Superb will arrive as a completely built unit (CBU), which significantly impacts both pricing and volume expectations. Industry estimates place the starting price between ₹50-60 lakh, positioning it directly against the Toyota Camry Hybrid while offering a more accessible alternative to German luxury sedans.

This CBU approach represents a strategic compromise. While it enables Skoda to test market appetite without massive local investment, it inherently limits sales volumes to around 1,000 units annually. The company appears comfortable with this constraint, viewing the Superb more as a brand ambassador than a volume driver.

Technology and Luxury That Justifies the Premium

The interior transformation deserves particular attention. The new Superb features a 13-inch floating touchscreen infotainment system, a 10-inch digital driver display, and ventilated seats with massage function – amenities that signal serious intent to compete with established luxury players. Four-zone climate control, a 12-speaker Canton sound system, and ambient lighting create an environment that rivals significantly more expensive alternatives.

Safety hasn’t been overlooked either. The Superb comes equipped with multiple airbags, Level 2 ADAS functionality including adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist, plus a 360-degree camera system. These features address Indian buyers’ increasing focus on comprehensive safety packages.

Internationally, the Superb offers six powertrain options including mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid variants. However, the Indian market will likely receive a more focused lineup starting with the 2.0-liter TSI petrol engine producing either 201hp or 261hp, depending on the variant. The diesel option represents the real differentiator, especially given competitors’ reluctance to offer such powertrains.

The AWD diesel configuration particularly intrigues enthusiasts. While traditionally positioned as a luxury sedan, the Superb’s newfound off-road capability could attract buyers seeking versatility beyond urban environments. This strategic pivot acknowledges changing consumer preferences toward SUV-like capabilities even in traditional sedan segments.

Market Timing and Competitive Landscape

The launch timing, expected around December 2025, coincides with growing premium sedan interest. The Toyota Camry’s success demonstrates viable demand exists, while luxury German sedans’ pricing leaves substantial room for a well-positioned alternative.

Skoda’s diesel revival also provides group-level CO2 emissions advantages, enabling continued petrol engine development across other models. This broader environmental strategy suggests the Superb’s diesel offering serves multiple corporate objectives beyond immediate sales figures.
